What is therapy?

People coming to therapy for the first time are often unsure as to what will happen.

Therapy differs from normal interactions in that the therapist does not bring their own agenda to the session but seeks to listen very carefully to what you are saying. The therapist will listen for what is said, what is not said and what you are saying through your body language.

This may sound very strange or even alarming to you. Most people who have been to therapy speak about how they have felt really listened to, perhaps for the first time in their lives.

The therapist seeks to be non judgemental and to draw out from you information by asking relevant questions.

At times you may be questioned about the meaning you give to certain thoughts or about episodes in your history.

At all times the therapist will work with you to help bring about positive change for you.

As a member of BACP (The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and as a therapist, Stephen abides by their code of ethics - Click here to see these. Click here to visit the main BACP website
